Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities

D&K’s transportation planners and engineers develop sidewalk, shared-use path, bike lane, traffic calming, pedestrian crossing, and signing and pavement marking projects. We lead bicycle and pedestrian facilities in rural and urban contexts to address challenges, such as encroachment into limited access rights-of-way, close proximity to infrastructure, street and rail crossings, stormwater treatment issues, utility conflicts, and property owner concerns. Our designs consider wetland and cultural resource impacts, security and safety concerns, and maintenance.

Active transportation projects include bike lanes and pedestrian buttons and signals; retiming of traffic signals to accommodate pedestrians; installation of radar feedback signs; narrowing of travel lanes to provide wider shoulders and reduce vehicle speeds; installation of pedestrian signing/crosswalks and textured crosswalks to improve visibility; the addition of lighting to improve safety; landscaping to address property owner concerns; and the incorporation of amenities, such as benches, wayfinding, bus shelters, and informational signs.
