West Hall Student Housing

Northfield, Vermont | Norwich University

To expand on-campus housing, NU needed a new 286-bed, five-story, 75,000-SF student housing facility. The project delivery method was unconventional, as the owner acted as the Construction Manager. D&K provided a range of services, including structural engineering. Structural systems consist of precast hollow core planks supported by structural steel beams and columns to facilitate low floor-to-floor heights. The team designed perimeter steel framing to support relieving angles for the brick veneer and spread footings and mat foundations. The project included a partial basement to contain the building’s mechanical equipment. We prepared the design in a BIM environment in collaboration with the architect. D&K provided construction phase services consisting of submittal review, construction observation, and Special Inspection coordination. This building meets LEED certification guidelines for energy conservation.
