RUT Runway 19 Safety Area

North Clarendon, Vermont | Vermont Agency of Transportation

To comply with contemporary FAA safety regulations, the Vermont Agency of Transportation needed to install a 60-ft runway safety area and 300-ft runway extension to Runway 19 at Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport. Constructed on a small promontory, the airport had already maximized the use of available length, and a retaining wall was constructed to support the extension. The project also included the replacement of two Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (MALSR) towers. DuBois & King provided construction contract administration and observation of the contractor’s activities and coordination of material testing in support of this project. The project served as an initial phase of a larger, fast-tracked safety initiative designed by D&K, which extended Runway 1 to include an Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS), a locator, and other hardware, as well as additional taxiway improvements and widening.
