Smugglers’ Notch Parking

Cambridge and Stowe, Vermont | Lamoille County Planning Commission

Near Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, a 1.5-mile section of VT 108 traverses a mountain pass at 2,165 ft and provides trailhead access for the Long Trail, local crags, and other day-use areas. Increased use of the area led to on-street and off-street informal parking that, in turn, led to environmental, drainage, and safety issues. D&K, the Lamoille County Planning Commission, the Vermont Agency of Transportation, and the Towns of Stowe and Cambridge worked together to plan and design a solution that resulted in the construction of five off-street lots with a combined capacity for approximately 100 vehicles. D&K permitting specialists led the project through the completion and acceptance of a NEPA Categorical Exclusion document. Our landscape architects and planners worked with our civil and transportation engineers to design renderings of improvements and stormwater treatment practices that maximized the use of native, high-elevation plantings.
