RUT Runway 1 Safety Improvements

Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport, North Clarendon, Vermont | Vermont Agency of Transportation

VTrans, in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, developed a program to bring Rutland’s Runway 1/19 into compliance with the Runway Safety Area (RSA) Program. Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport is a Part 139 airport served by a 5,003-foot runway with a minimal apron surrounding the terminal buildings. Under an Aviation retainer contract, D&K assisted VTrans with design of the runway safety area and taxiway improvements and associated permitting. Our services included design of the runway extension and a new 50-foot-wide parallel taxiway to serve as a staging and taxi area. The design connected Taxiway D to the end of the runway. The improvements included design of a 600-foot-long RSA at the end of the runway using an Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) to safely arrest overrunning aircraft, which reduces the required length of the RSA by 40%. Due to funding constraints, D&K provided design services on an accelerated schedule and provided deliverables for the RSA improvements in a three-month time frame.
