Flood Study of the Mad River Area

Fayston, Warren, and Waitsfield, Vermont | Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission

The Mad River Valley is a rural though populous region characterized by steep slopes, narrow river channels, and a relatively high level of transportation infrastructure and building stock along valley floors and roads accessing resort areas. D&K worked with the CVRPC to survey the area and develop a study that cataloged the hydrology and hydraulics of areal stream channels, culverts, and bridges, as well as conditions faced by homes and businesses located near flood hazard areas. Our team worked to meet CVRPC’s timeline by completing survey and desktop services through the winter and developed detailed hydraulic models of the subject streams using HEC-RAS. D&K generated inundation maps for flows ranging from the 10- to 500-year flood flows, as well as a narrative report.
